Rethinking English Grammar

How important do you think grammar is? Here is a video exploring the importance of German grammar in Nazi Germany. If you are not convinced by Hitler's arguments, try this offering from an entrepenurial Russian girl living in the states. Her website is full of "educational musings" on the nature of English, including this interview on Fox news..

Let us know what you think.

Over Boyled. Another one of Andrew's rants

Finally, I could not resist the tempation any longer. Her name was everywhere. As much as I despise these types of programmes, my curiosity had got the better of me. I finally tuned into youtube to see who Susan Boyle was. And yes, I was amazed. Yes, I was teary-eyed. And yes, for sure, I watched it again and again. She deserves her moment and I am reminded of my prejudices but the real winner, and this is what I really hate, are those slimy producers in ITV (Independent Television Company) who continue to exploit our fabulously ordinary lives by delving into our deepest hopes and aspirations. Isn't this the madness of Jade Goody (an ordinary not overly-educated woman prone to racist sentiments, themselves fed by the national media). A woman whose only fame is wanting to be famous so desperately that she will do anything to achieve this goal. And millions tune into TV to watch her as she is dying.

Obviously Susan Boyle, has real talent, which Jade Goody clearly did not, but the formula is remarkably the same: the best profits are made by exploiting the dreams and aspirations of the ordinary (you don't have to pay them, they do it for free), laughing at them or applauding them as they stretch towards that demi-god status of stardom.

But how rotten things really are is revealed when you have a media incapable of crticising this nonsense. There is a reasonable attempt in the Guardian to add a critial note to the Susan Boyle phenomena (see here) but it still works on the idiotic premise that the panel of judges and TV crew were genuinely unaware of this woman's talent. Don't worry Tanya Gold, you can tell the truth. There are no six year olds reading the Guardian. You are allowed to write that Father Christmas doesn't exist or that they are not really fighting in WWF (World Wrestling Federation) wrestling matches.

Well, I have to disagree therefore with the show's name, the show that brought Suan Boyle to fame, "Britain's got Talent", I would have to contradict them by saying that there is very little talent whatsoever. Whatever talent there is is stifled by money-men in suits looking for easy formulas to boost profits. Indeed, in the field of journalism, I would have to conclude that there is no talent at all. I had to search as far as a pig farm in New Zealand for a fine piece of writing on this subject; via ,of course, the rather poor offerings of La Vanguardia (not that you would want to read that -it's in Spanish).

Anyway, what do you think of Susan Boyle? Share your opinions by leaving your ideas under comments below.

Seeking Justice 20 Years On

Here is a very sad article and video (let it cherge up) about some of the families of those who died at Hillsborough twenty years ago who are still seeking the truth about the circumstances in which their loved ones died. It seems incredible to me that the authorities are still denying them the psychological closure they deserve and need. Twenty years have passed, most senior officers have retired, lessons have been learned (apparently) so why do the authorities insist on denying the obvious, that there was and is a cover up to disguise the criminal neglect of the relevant authorities on that day? People died who needn't have both as a result of the managment of events before the incident and after the incident. It's that easy.

The Imagination of an Architect

Having had the odd architect in my classes, and I mean that in both senses of the word, I was amused by an article I read in El Periodico but followed up in the English language version of Das Spiegel. I really liked the cheekiness of certain young German architects when asked to submit proposals for the redevelopment of the old airport in Berlin. Have a look at the article here.

What do you thimk of the ideas?

Have you any alternative suggestions? (Come on Francesc, I know you're not an architect but I also know you can do me particulary proud here)

The New Learning Paradigm

What is the purpose of education? In the following video, John Tagg draws a distinction between the espoused theory of education and theory in use (what really happens in education). I have some even stronger views on the subject myself (no surprise there) but this video is a highly enjoyable and intelligible critique of the modern university and, indeed, education generally. The video is also a lovely example of how to make an hour long presentation accessible and entertaining. Try it!!

Is this Man a Terrorist?

The Dalai Lama's planned visit to South Africa to take part in a "peace conference" has been cancelled by the South African Authorities, who claim that his appearance at the event would shift the focus away from South Africa onto Tibet. Although the South African Authorities claim they have not been influenced by Chinese pressure, the Chinese Ambassador admits to protesting to the South African Government about the Dalai Lama's planned attendance at the international event. Read more here:

What do you think: Is this a sensible decision by the Government to keep the focus on South Africa? Is it the South African Government responding to economic presure? or Is it a simple compromise because the government know he is the West's favourite terrorist but do not want to offend Europe by seeming to agree with the Chinese?

Let us know your opinion.

Fathers' Day

Father's Day was rather unsuccessful for me, no cards, no presents, so I have decided to boost my popularity. As usual the incrediblly helpful videojug has come to the rescue with this masterpiece on how to be the best dad in the galaxy. Hopefully, with these tips I can now look forward to a more fruitful fathers' day next year.

If you are a father, how was your fathers' day?

Brits Abroad

MSN News are obsessed with a photo gallery formula where they lead with a short article followed by ten photographs depicting stories supporting their claims in the lead article. Have a look at this example and read some of the stories they have chosen to support their lead article.
Can you think of any other examples of Brits behaving badly abroad? Do you think the problem is exaggerated? Is there a problem? Is it fair to single out the British? Do Spanish toursits behave in the same way?
You can also watch this news report from ITN about increasing arrests of Britih toursits abroad.

Wacky Wicki: There's A New Game In Town

Welcome to the launch of a fantastic new teaching tool “The Wachy Wicki”. It could even replace “Kill the Cat” in my students’ affections. Based on an exercise popular with many of my students (at least that is what they tell me), Wacky Wicki takes the “Correction Slot” idea and puts it on line.

I will place a text under comments which contains ten errors. Readers will then copy and paste the text into Word, make a number of corrections (using underlining or highlighting (resaltar). and paste it back as a new comment. I will then indicate how many errors are left; you could have made more errors in your attempt to correct the text. The errors could be either punctuation, spelling, collocations, binominals, particles in phrasal verbs or verb patterns. It is best to study other attempts to identify where the mistakes are and what the correct form is.

Good luck. Enjoy.

Isabel Coixet

I recently saw "The Secret Life of Words" and was very impressed. To me Coixet is the new Wim Wenders. She has a new way of exploring relationships and helping us to see new things in the world around us. This might be why, at the end of the film, she pays homage to the Artist and Art Critic, John Berger, for helping her in her way of seeing, I also liked the soundtrack, in particular the song from Antony and the Johnsons.

Have you seen the film?

What do you think of Coixet?

Eat Well For Under 15 Euros

Over the next month I want to turn this blog into a "listings magazine" for visitors to Barcelona. (Not really, but could be a way of making money). As part of my initiative I want to identify a Barcelona that is still accessible to the average pocket. First in this series is a list of restaurants where you can eat out for only 15 euros (or under). This price includes tax but does not include alcohol. It also means the evening and not an afternoon menu. Please leave your suggestions under comments. Should you visit, or have visited, one of the recommendations, then please give the venue a mark from one to five. Five meaning excellent value for money and 1 meaning very poor value for money. DON'T GRADE YOUR OWN RECOMMENDATIONS.

Mistakes We Have Made

Here at the International House Barcelona website you can hear some pretty funny language mistakes native English speakers have made here in Barcelona when trying to speak Spanish. It reminds me of when I told my German "Father-in-law" that "I was very beuatiful yesterday" (Ich war sehr schön gestern). Of course I meant to say it was very beautiful but the moment was lost.
Even more amusing is this 3rd grader's essay which has the most unfortunate spelling mistake. The word "Hores" to our adult senses seems more like whores than horses.

Have you got any language gaffes (errors) to share with us?

Revolutionary New Method

As you know, I'm always searching for new ways and ideas to improve my teaching. You can imagine my delight, therefore, when I discovered this marvellous blend of Total Physical Response, Situational Language Teaching and Intercultural Exchange. Don't worry if you don't understand this jargon, just bring along your gym outfit next week and we are going to have fun, fun, fun. I am so very excited about this new method. I think I need to go to Japan to really study it. How do you say "take anything you want" in Japanese? Anybody know?

Zen Time

So what is the sound of one hand clapping? After all that sex and violence , donuts and the upper floors of a certain hospital (ask Rosa, I've never been there myself) it's time, at last, for some spirituality. Here is a fabulous story from the equally fabulous website "Zen Stories to tell your neighbour", which contains even more of these wonderful gems. "Banishing a ghost" just happens to be my favourite. Please leave your opinions on the story, i.e what you think it means, whether you enjoyed it or not, in comments below. You will find responses already posted on the Zen Stories website to help you decide personally what you thought the message of the story was. Enjoy.

The World of Churnalism

This is an excellent article on the phenomena of “Churnalism”. Churrnalism is a play on words, a play on the phrasal verb to churn out, meaning to produce a great quantity of something automatically without any great skill or thought. Churnalism is being contrasted with the ideals of real journalism: independence, skill in analysing and presenting ideas, courage of conviction, investigation.

The Best Murder Mystery Game Ever

Having recently started a unit of the course book with my class at Grifols in which we talk about crime, I couldn't resist inroducing you all to the world's greatest murder mystery adventure. You might think this is Mrs Marple or Sherlock Homes, but you would be wrong. For sheer action and excitement, not to mention a test of your detective skills, this game simply cannot be beaten.

I suggest you start with game 1, Stabbing in Stickville, before trying the other games. Let us know how you get on with the game and please share your ideas on how to solve the murders.

Learning English doesn't get any better than this. Enjoy.

Maite the Winner of The Unsuitable Boy Big Quiz

Congratulations to Maite. She spotted the picture of the Flying Spaghetti Monster behind Moss's desk on IT Crowd and correctly deduced that he must be the Pastfarian.
Roy is clearly a spagnostic.

May the sauce be with you

Check out this website for further sightings.
Footnote: Pastafarians have a very interesting idea of heaven and hell, what is your alternative vision of heaven and hell?

The Unsuitable Boy Big Quiz

Having succesfully repaired the link to IT Crowd and the episode of Yesterday's Jam, it is now time to set you the Big Quiz question:

In the first episode of IT Crowd we learn that one of the technicians is a Pastafarian. What I want you to do is to identify which technician, Roy or Moss, is the Pastafarian and provide evidence for this assertion.

Good luck.

IT Crowd

This is one of the funniest comedy series in a number of years. Read the background to the show in wiki and watch the the first episode through megavideo I recommend the first episode as it is extremely funny, a good introduction to the characters and the script is available here.
I must say in advance that over the years I have worked with people in IT and it has been enormously enjoyable. There is definitely something "special" about the way IT people relate to the world. In fact, it was students in IT who introduced me to the show and explained the strange posters on the wall and the peculiar messages on the T-shirts-amazing.
Give it a try and let me know what you think.

Cambridge Exams

For those of you thinking about FCE/CAE this June, you should visit the British Council website now in order to find advice about registering for the exam.
An excellent site for advice on taking these exams and realistic practice tests is at flo-joe.
Please speak to an experiened teacher before deciding whether to do the exam, they are expensive, and which exam would be most appropriate for you.

Good luck.

Obama Writes Letter To His Daughters

Am I too cynical? Unlike most of Americans and British, Obama's letter to his daughters failed to move me. For me, the style of letter was not appropriate for the ages of his daughters and such sentiments are best told in person at the family meal table rather than published in a national magazine. If the comments were intended for his children, then they should have remained their personal property and were I to have read such sentiments published freely by the now adult children some years later, I'm sure I would have been impressed. Personally, I would have welcomed a letter from Obama to the children of Gaza. What do you think?

Google and Global Warming

This article from the BBC made me smile as I have personally searched hundreds and hundreds of articles on global warming to keep myself informed. The author appears to be suggesting that it would have been better for the planet if I hadn't.
Are you surprised by the article? Whose figures do you trust?

Very Funny Advert

Many thanks to Maite for sharing this advert with us.:

But is this the reality? In fact this Heineken advert would appear to contradict the claims of the this article.

As always, what do you think?

Quality Student Review

I've just seen Albert's excellent review of Videojug: See the review under "comments" for "How to Behave at the Office Christmas Party" (Dec 2008)
A real quality review. Let's have more of the same; especially as it is now easier than ever to post a comment.

Letters to Darwin.

To celebrate 200 years since the birth of Charles Darwin, the BBC comissioned five eminent scientists to write ficticious letters to the great man. My favourite was from Peter Bentley, which, has luck would have it, is available to listen to and read through Peter Bentley's own blog.

I think it's an excellent letter. What would you have written?

Young German Love

They might not have a sense of humour, at least not according to British stereotypes, but the Germans certainly do have a strong sense of romance and adventure. Check this story out:

Elope- means to run away in order to get married
To foil a plan- means to stop the plan happening
Tie the knot- means to get married
